Demo Production Notes: CD Cover

Here are two things- the back cover with no picture, but a bunch of text
around it because fonts were really hard to choose--and then just the back
cover with a few fonts around it--I am not sending it to Wendell because his
email won't be able to take it--shoot I don't know if yours will either-- ok
I just made it smaller now I am including Wendell--I hope you guys like it,
but I know it's kina girlie--but it is cool too-- let me know--I can always
use it for something else if you don't like it--I drew her on the computer
though-- I am getting good at that huh?

Here's what I'm going to do.

In October I will be redirecting the $500 that I had allotted for this fe album to release a PROMO material of 200 to 300 units only.  These units will NOT be FOR SALE and will be used to send to labels, publications, friends, etc--basically to add it to my music-portfolio.  I will be using a very basic cover for a jacket/sleeve design (2 sided colored printing), with smallsized shots of each of us at Club Hell (the manipulated photos that Anthony took).  You will both be given a few complimentary copies (specifically 6 each).

The free electrons website will be renewed for another 5 years.  I will take over the management of the site from Wendell (to give him a bit of breathing space).  The new site will also act as a portal for my other projects, and free electrons as a band MAY BE downplayed.  The reasoning:  There haven't been any activities nor communications AND Wendell is focusing on FOAM materials AND I've paid for the domain and the server for almost 2 years now.

I will be out of the country starting in June 2004 for 2 to 3 years, so any music activities I take from now until then will be dependent on this plan.

I would still very much love to record new materials with you both. But it seems that everyone has different priorities now. After all are we not free electrons?

Fishing Session: New Materials 2003

NOTES: Knowing that this was our first session in a long time, overall, I think we did well. There are some things that we can keep in mind in the near future, such as:

A. Sync the machines as follows: your 202, to your EA1, to my Miscia, and then to my Sampler. In effect, you will be controlling the tempo and will not be able to stop your 202.

B. Program our machines/songs so that there is greater interplay between us.  When you are the primary "owner" of the song, I should be able to add things freely but not excessively, and vice
versa.

C. Add vocal samples, other samples, or "live vocals".  In general, the tracks are quite dry at this point.

A lot of the above will be addressed when we have more sessions.  In the meantime, you and I should just send by snailmail each other's themes, so we can "compose" around them.

THE EXIT STRATEGY:
Before we get too involved with this project, I am offering an "exit". That is, if upon listening to this CD you do not feel like the project will work (musically)--whether our styles or visions are different or not, etc--we should discuss it soon and decide. I know there are other factors involved also.  However, at this point we do not have any significant involvement yet, so either we decide to quit now with this "tour" project, or really stick to it and work towards the goal, and overcome potential perceived problems. I know that the distance is a pretty big hurdle, but it can be overcome.

I myself think that it can work musically.  It may need you and I to coordinate a trip to DC/Boston to get it right pretty soon and record in a more relaxed atmosphere.  I think if we do not get anything done by October (to send out to clubs/organizers abroad) then we may seriously re-consider our goal.  Like I said, my goal is the tour, whether a 1-month Euro tour or 3-months including Northeast, or whatever combination.  I will be quiting my job earlier than necessary for grad school.  I think this is a pretty strong indication of my resolve.  But, if we don't get any tour lined up, then I'll just take off and roam Europe for 3 months, maybe study Flamenco.

We should naturally talk some more about this.

Thanks both for your responses.  I would really like to get this sent to the manufacturer before the end of August 2003.  So, please let us all aim for that. And mean it this time.  Otherwise my $-share might have to go to another project or a different means of releasing 333 units.  It would also be good to know if we are all having difficulty financing our end.  It would at least be good to know if this was the actual problem.

P.S. There is a slightly cheaper alternative from Wonderdrug Records in Boston, but I haven't seen a sample of their production, nor have researched this further. It comes at $1,200 for 1,000 retail-ready units with optional barcode. The other good thing is, I can pick it up from their plant in MA. Delivering it to you folks is another story.

PPS. My share of $500 is ready to go.

edits, but "Justification" does come to mind. "She
Talks" shouldn't be touched... I like the psycho mix
of "Watch Out", maybe a radio edit of "Hurelegeht"?

Just some ideas that have been rattling...

The main reason that I was thinking about doing one
final mixing session, is that in addition to wanting
to add to Weighted One (once again, awesome direction
that you took it!), there are a couple of other little
things that I'd like to work on. I know that you want
to get this thing out the door and are sick of it and
all that and can totally understand your feelings on
this, having experienced those things myself... But in
listening to the mix, there are a couple of things
that I would like to change.

More space at the end of Music & Madness before After
Hours.
Longer fade/more space at the end of Hello Louisville.
Bring down Voyager space track from 4:05 to 4:45 on
Rosy Fingers.

I'm more than willing to do what I can to work this
out. I feel bad that you have so much of the mixing
work, and I of course do like to put in my 2 cents
worth. So that is why I was thinking about the
Thanksgiving deal. But your arguments to keep this
thing going are good, and I'm definitely not trying to
drag it out unnecessarily. But also my perfectionism
kicks in when I'm thinking about 1000 units that will
be around for a while. If nothing else, its sure to
make a splash. In a years time I don't want to have
more than 20 in my possession, even if I have to give
them all away. So I want it to be good, even if it
does take a little more time. On the other hand, the
major interuption of the rythmn that happened in the
last release is something that I don't want to repeat.
Things have changed alot since then, and I can take on
more. Things have been freeing up some of late, and
I've been turning to the indoor and music things of
late, getting caught up with projects that I haven't
worked on since Spring. So it'll definitely run
smoother than last time. Pretty much we can run the
rest of this phase of the project independent of
Taylor, though I do hope that she joins in on the work
and opinions. I can set the type on the cover and
stuff if necessary and can get the mastering thing set
up, though your help would be good on this. The
feelers are out. We need a little more info, then we
can choose.
My main concern though, is that you not get too too
tense over all of this. I know that alot is on the
line and this is the biggest thing that we've done to
date and all of that, but above all this is supposed
to be fun, even though mixing can be painful at
times;) But it is fun and cool as well. I would point
out that even with all of the problems and clashes
that we all have had over the last year, this is a
really cool project and something that we all can be
proud of. A couple of weeks here and there may seem to
be alot now, but ten years down the pike it will seem
as nothing. We are going in the right direction, and
have been, even if you and I both wish that things
would have and will move faster. But I'll tell you one
thing, I bet that ten years ago you would have never
guessed that you'd be able to do all of the things
that you can do now. What will the next ten bring?

So be light of heart, my friend, though of course the
work has only just begun.
At least 500 mailers have to go out. Addresses for all
of those need to be found. Thousands will have to be
weeded through to find the right places. Even then it
will mostly be blind luck.
The website needs to be revamped. MP3s need to go up,
we have to be able to accept credit cards (check
http://www.CCbill.com). How do you feel about Omar and
Gala working on it? Do you have their emails (I have
if you need)? Good folks, very creative, will work for
free. And are not necessarily a package deal with
Taylor. I know you've had reluctance with this...
Links to CD Baby and CD Now and Tower Online and
Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com need to be
established and maintained. At least we will get
accounts with them though the manufacturer and the all
important barcode.
Money needs to be made to support the tour. Many
emails must be sent to get this whole tour thing
together. Work permits may have to be obtained.
Tickets need to be bought, accommodations sought. How
will we travel once over there? What is the best
country to rent a car from? What is the budget? Is
your passport up to date?
I have some dentistry that needs attending to.
And so on and so on.
Anyway enough prattle. This is just the start. Very
close, yet still far.

Last Call (production notes)

Hey Six,
Hope that this reaches you while you are still at work. Hopefully you haven't hit the trail early and
are still on the 6 pm leaving that you were on when I was up.  Well here are my thoughts on the album. Damn close if you ask me. Nothing could be done and I'd still be happy to release it.

Spoken Word Part 1 - down in volume
The word "sympathie" needs to come out in 1st spoken word (third phrase{2nd track??})

Hurelegeht - I can see vocs coming up a bit, but the balance overall is good. Light touch, 3-7 cents or something. Overall nice nice! And I still don't hear the clicks from overloads that you were talking about.

Tres Diabolique - I love this mix. Definitely the standard for the balance of the uptempo pieces (future and past).

She Talks in Colours - I love this mix as well. Straight up and good balance.

Luv N Da Jungle - Seems all good, but Taylor's vocs sometimes seem low in comparison to Suzy's now that we have bumped her up. Perhaps a second track of just Taylor's vocs the way we did Suzy's, a more bass heavy EQed version, then mix it into the main mix at a very low volume to balance out Suzy. They are almost there, but it just seems not quite on. Alternately Suzy and
the instruments could come down a couple of notches, all in equal amounts. I like Suzy's current levels in regards to the instruments and the fullness of her tracks sounds together. Taylor just seems a bit thin in comparison to the amended Suzy tracks...

Music N Madness - As good as it is going to get. Still need to put on some post master eq on it and the other of the first run of songs. Been thinking about a tube simulator or analogue/digital hybrid compressor or something. Taylor is working on getting into her friends studio, and we can mess around with trying a couple of other places. I know that Cue Studios have such things, but of course they charge.

Afterhours - Good overall balance in volumes and dynamics. I would like to hear the two piano parts either more in the middle or moving around in regards to panning. Everything else seems good.

Spoken Word Two - Volume down, everything else good.

Justification - Vocs up a bit in places?? Nice solid balance. I don't really see much to change. Just a
matter of amount of fanatisism. Probably no need to touch it. Good?

Watch Out - Vocs up a bit. I liked it before when it was really loud, especially because of the vocal fx. It was more scary then, though the vocs WERE just a little too much. Just bump em up a couple of points. Uneffected trax the most...

Virtuality - All good.

Louisville KY - All good.

Rosy Fingers of Dawn - All good.

Of course the newset songs seem to have the best balance, then the set before that, then the earliest
set. Our writing styles are changing and our knowledge levels are rising, so what can you do? Final volume and eq are going to be necessary, but we need to be careful in finding the right place, group if we sub it out, and we should all be there for input. You and I can also try our hands at it first, though our means, but I am beginning to see the wisdom of a third party approach. Just don't want to spend a mint doing it under some uptight situation. Anyway that should about do it. Don't go too crazy. We could always do shome stuff when you come down.
